Policing Reimagined

About Me

Welcome and thanks for checking out my campaign page!  I hope you've had a chance to review the five campaign priorities on my home page.  If not, please head there when you are finished here.  This is a critical time for our community, and our nation, and these issues are more important than ever.

I don't know about you, but I'm a people person.  No, I'm not a huge extrovert, but if there is one thing I've enjoyed most in my life, it is serving people.  I believe people - - not politics, position or power - are what truly matters in life.

From a very young age I developed a love for serving others and I've had some pretty incredible opportunities to do just that throughout my life.  From donating one of my kidneys to a total stranger to volunteering at the World Trade Center after the terrorist attacks of 9/11, God has used me in some pretty amazing ways.  Bringing hope, healing, and comfort to others in need is so fulfilling and what I strive to make my life about.

I was born right here in Traverse City and have lived here most of my life.  I'm married to an amazing woman and have 5 beautiful kids, ranging in age from 9 to 17.  Three of my kids are biological, one is adopted, and another was an exchange student that came to live with us for a school season and is now part of our family for life.  Our family has also cared for lots of other kiddos throughout the years, both in and out of the foster care system.

As a man of faith, my life has been radically impacted by the endless love and grace of Jesus.  I believe that faith is not meant to be a spectator sport and that it requires us to get out of the stands and into the game.  God has used me in so many ways to be his hands and feet, and this run to be the next Sheriff of Grand Traverse County is no different.

My love for law enforcement began at a very young age. In fact, by the time I was 15, I was out doing ride alongs with a large police department. One of my most memorable birthday presents as a kid was getting a bullet proof vest - yeah, not what every kid asks for :) I believe police and corrections officers have such an amazing opportunity to impact the lives of the people they serve and this honor must never be taken lightly. I envision a sheriffs office that puts this thought at the forefront of everything they do.

During my 12 years of training and working in the law enforcement, security, and military arenas, I've responded to a wide variety of calls ranging from fatal car accidents to domestic disturbances, drug overdoses, arsons, felonious assaults, suicides, and other types of incidents.  I've had the honor of providing and leading security details for two US presidents in a host nation environment, and have overseen security of the nations most lethal weapons systems, valued at over $1 Billion.  Additionally, I've overseen church security programs, taught emergency preparedness and health and safety programs for over 20 years, and trained with SWAT and K-9 teams.

Over the years, I've spent countless hours serving those in need, whether it be at the Safe Harbor Homeless Shelter, Father Fred Frostbite Food Drive, Special Olympics, Freedom Builders, or other organizations.  I've also served as a volunteer emergency preparedness instructor for over 20 years, teaching life saving skills to first responders, and community members alike.  Additionally, I've had the honor of leading several ministry programs in areas like financial stewardship, leadership, and mens ministry.

Please don't hesitate to reach out to me by phone, email, or through my Facebook page if you have any questions or would like to grab coffee.
